Biography - Rosita Gendernalik
I am a retired chemical engineer who worked in both academia and the automotive industries. I originally came to the U.S. from the Philippines as a Chemistry graduate student, subsequently earning MS & PhD degrees. After retirement, I enrolled in the Ceramics and Photography Programs at the Oakland Community College(OCC) - Royal Oak, Michigan.
My ceramic pieces have been successfully exhibited in juried fine arts competitions and sold at various art galleries and art centers in Michigan. My work has received several prizes and can be found in several private collections. I maintain residences in Southfield and Indian River, Michigan.
I am continually inspired and challenged to create unique works using basic pottery hand building techniques (pinch/coil/petal/slab) in free-form style on various clay bodies. Most of my pieces are formed using one particular hand building technique called "petal-built". To the best of my knowledge this technique is not covered in published hand building textbooks. This technique simply uses individual pieces of clay put together piece by piece to form the vessel. The individual pieces (which could be any shape) are simply arranged and connected in the same fashion as individual petals of a flower. It is a free-style technique whereby the desired shape of the final “Petal Pot Vessel” is formed progressively with each layer of “petal” pieces. After the vessel itself is formed,decorations such as flowers and insects are then appliquéd piece by piece (e.g., one petal or single tiny flower at a time) over the finished vessel. Over four thousand (4,000) individually placed “petals” are normally used to build the large vessels with intricate designs which are about 19-22 inches tall.
